How to Store a Cordless Mower Battery Over the Off-Season So It Keeps Its Run Time

The battery is the single most expensive part of a cordless mower, and how you charge and store it decides whether it lasts five years or fades in two. As the cutting season winds down and the mower heads for the shed, a few minutes of care now protects a pack that can cost more than £200 to replace. Get the off-season routine right and the same battery holds close to its original run time for years. Get it wrong and you will be shopping for a new one long before the mower itself wears out.

Why a Cordless Battery Fades, and Hides It Until the End

Modern mowers run on lithium-ion cells, which behave very differently from the older nickel-cadmium packs many gardeners remember. Those older batteries slowed down gradually, dimming and weakening so you could feel the power draining and squeeze out the last of a job. Lithium-ion holds a steady output almost to the end, then stops. As the yard tool experts at Toro explain through Family Handyman, lithium batteries “output power at a fairly steady rate until battery voltage reaches a pre-set cutoff point, and then the battery shuts off completely.” Start a job with less than a quarter of the charge left and the mower can cut out mid-stripe with no warning.

Two things age a pack and shrink that run time: the number of charge cycles it goes through, and simple calendar time, which ticks on even when the battery sits idle. Both processes speed up under heat and under deep discharge. A battery that is regularly cooked in a hot shed or run flat and left flat loses capacity far faster than one kept cool and topped up, which is why storage habits do as much for battery life as the mowing itself.

The Charging Habits That Age a Pack Fastest

A handful of everyday habits quietly shorten a battery’s life, and all of them are easy to fix. The experts quoted by Family Handyman set out clear rules. Keep the battery at room temperature and, in the words of lithium-ion researcher Dr Xiaoliang Wang, “do not expose batteries to heat and direct sunlight.” Heat drives the chemical aging that erodes capacity, so a battery left on a sunny windowsill or in a baking garage is being worn out even when it is doing nothing.

Do not run the pack down to zero, and do not leave it sitting on the charger long after it reaches full. Both extremes stress the cells. Use the charger that came with the mower, or a replacement the manufacturer recommends, rather than a cheap unbranded unit. That last point is a safety issue as much as a longevity one. Lithium cells can fail through a process called thermal runaway, where an internal fault sends the temperature climbing out of control, and it can be triggered by overcharging, overheating or a poor-quality battery. Jason Fladhammer, quality assurance director at Batteries Plus, offers the reassuring flip side: “If the batteries are used and stored according to the manufacturer, then lithium batteries are not more likely to catch on fire than other batteries.” In other words, a genuine pack treated properly is safe. The problems tend to come from uncertified aftermarket batteries and chargers, or from leaving a battery charging unattended on something flammable.

One more habit to drop is charging a hot battery straight after a long cut, or running a series of quick discharge and recharge cycles back to back. Let the pack cool to room temperature first, then charge it. Steady, moderate charging is far kinder to the cells than repeated fast turnarounds.

How to Store the Battery Through the Off-Season

When mowing slows to a stop in autumn, the battery should not simply be left clipped into the mower in a cold, damp shed. Take a few minutes to put it away properly. First, with the battery removed and the mower switched off, clean and dry the deck and blades, then set the machine aside. Removing the battery before you touch anything under the deck is a basic safety step that stops the blade turning while your hands are near it.

Store the battery indoors, somewhere dry at normal room temperature. A range of about 15C to 25C (59F to 77F) keeps chemical aging slow, so a cupboard or utility room beats a freezing garage or a hot loft. Toro’s guidance through Family Handyman is to avoid leaving a battery in a hot garage, in the sun or in a car, to store it indoors over winter, and not to leave it fully discharged for long periods, all of which shorten its life.

For a long spell in storage, the charge level counts for more than most gardeners realise. Battery specialists recommend putting lithium-ion cells away at a partial charge of roughly 40 to 60 per cent rather than fully charged or empty. A pack stored full sits under constant high-voltage stress, which accelerates calendar aging, while a pack stored flat can slip into a deep discharge that causes permanent damage. Somewhere around half charge is the sweet spot. Lithium-ion loses only about two to three per cent of its charge a month sitting idle, but that adds up over a long winter, so check the pack every two to three months and top it back up to about half if the fuel gauge has dropped below a third. Whatever the general advice, the mower’s own manual is the final word, as some makers specify their own storage charge and interval.

Before it goes away, wipe grass, dust and damp off the battery casing and the metal contacts with a dry cloth, as clinging clippings trap moisture that can corrode the terminals over a long winter. Keep the stored battery off flammable surfaces, and do not leave it permanently plugged into a live charger through the winter as a shortcut to keeping it topped up. A quick check and top-up every couple of months is safer and better for the cells.

When the Run Time Really Has Gone

Every battery eventually reaches the point where a full charge no longer lasts a full lawn, and it helps to understand the numbers before you buy a replacement. Two figures describe a pack. Amp-hours tell you how long the battery can deliver a set current, so a 5-amp-hour battery gives 5 amps for an hour, less if the mower is working hard through thick grass. Watt-hours, found by multiplying volts by amp-hours, describe the true energy stored and give a fairer comparison between packs of different voltages. When you shop for a spare, compare watt-hours rather than amp-hours alone, and buy only a genuine or certified battery for your mower’s system.

The cost is the reason all this care is worth the effort. A single genuine replacement pack, such as an EGO 56V 5Ah battery, sells for around £229 (about $249), more than many gardeners paid for the mower deck itself. A smaller 2.5Ah pack still runs to roughly £120 (about $130), so even the cheaper option is far from throwaway money. Stretching a battery from two seasons to five or six by keeping it cool, charged sensibly and stored properly is money straight back in your pocket, and it keeps a working mower out of landfill.

Your End-of-Season Battery Checklist

Before the mower goes away for the winter, run through five quick steps. Take the battery out and clean the mower with the power off. Let a warm pack cool, then set it to roughly half charge. Store it indoors at room temperature, off concrete and away from sun and heat. Check it every couple of months and top up to about half if it has drained below a third. And keep the original charger, using it only when the battery is cool and never leaving it plugged in unattended. Five minutes now, and the most expensive part of your mower is ready to go the moment the grass starts growing again.
